The Spaniard took his seventh title at the Foro Itálico as he beat Roger Federer with a resounding 6-1, 6-3 in a nearly perfect match.

It seemed a long way off in January when he decided not to play at the Australian Open, but Rafael Nadal is back to his best.

On Sunday the Spaniard overcame his rival and friend Roger Federer 6-1, 6-3 in the grand finale of the Rome tournament in which Nadal played a near-perfect match as he demonstrated his quality on clay and took his seventh title in the Italian capital.

The pace of Nadal’s game was far superior to that of his opponent as early on as the second point (the first was an ace by Roger Federer) and his tennis was reminiscent of his best. Federer was unable to reply to the shots of the Spaniard, who finished the first set off in 24 minutes.

In the second set, Nadal kept his foot down and continued to punish Federer from the baseline until reaching 5-1. Then the Spaniard slowed the match down a little allowing Federer to win two consecutive games before closing the match out 6-1, 6-3.

This is the sixth title of the season for Rafa Nadal, and his third Masters 1000. In addition, the Majorcan player is now in first place in the Champions Race despite not playing in the first two months of the year and his win in Rome takes him to number four in the ATP rankings. Nadal now has a total of 56 titles, 24 of them at Masters 1000 tournaments, and judging by his game in recent weeks, he will be the clear favourite to win at Roland Garros which starts on the 26th of May.

The US player took her 51st title as she defeated Azarenka in Rome 6-1, 6-3 and has now strung together 24 consecutive victories.

Serena Williams’ streak continues. In the final of the Rome tournament the US player beat the world number 3 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-3 in an encounter which was closer than suggested by the score.

Practically all of the games in the first set reached deuce, but time and time again, Serena made the most of her advantages on key points. The world number one’s backhand proved to be a weapon against which Azarenka had little defence. The Belarusian served solidly, but Serena Williams repeatedly responded with even better returns.

After closing the first set out 6-1, the Mutua Madrid Open’s recently crowned champion also took a lead in the second, and although Azarenka drew level and looked to have got back into the match, Serena ended the tie with a flourish.

With this win, Serena Williams takes her 24th consecutive victory, the best run of her career, and her 51st singles title as a professional. This is the US player’s second crown in Rome, a tournament which she won in 2002, the same year in which she won what is so far her only Roland Garros. This will be the next challenge for the world number 1 who continues to demonstrate that she is one of the most talented players in the history of tennis.

Nadal and Federer will again face each other in a final on Sunday at the Rome Masters 1000 having beaten Berdych and Paire in the semi-finals.

Tennis fans are in luck, as on Sunday they will finally be able to experience another final between two of the best tennis players of recent times: Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

The Spaniard, who was recently crowned champion of the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open, continues to play spectacular tennis, and on Saturday he overcame Tomas Berdych 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final of the Rome tournament for the eighth time in his career. A brilliant start to the match by Nadal led to a heavily one-sided first set against Berdych who looked totally overwhelmed by the Spaniard’s game.

The second set was much closer, and it remained level until, when the scoreboard showed 4-4, Nadal broke the Czech player’s serve once more and then closed the match out on his. Nadal has continually blown his opposition away since his return to the court, and after coming back from a seven month layoff he has reached the final in all eight tournaments he has played in. Also, if he wins in Rome he will go back to fourth in the ATP rankings to the detriment of his countryman David Ferrer.

His opponent in the final will again be Roger Federer who defeated French player Benoit Paire in the second semi-final 7-6, 6-4. Paire asked a lot of questions of Federer in a set which went to the ex-world number 1 in a tie-break riddled with faults.

The Swiss will be bidding for title number 77 at the Foro Itálico on Sunday, but he will not have an easy ride against a Rafael Nadal who is on a run of 14 matches without losing.
