Marca Plus and the Mutua Madrid Open in three sets

Antonio Arenas Mutua News

Marca Plus is, for the third consecutive year, the official magazine of the Mutua Madrid Open. Its partnership with the Madrid tournament has been a resounding success and, if we look at it like a tennis match, three sets have been played in three very different years.

On August 20 2014 Marca Plus was named the most innovative product in Spanish journalism. The product, designed specifically for mobile devices, quickly earned its place on smartphones and tablets all over Spain, with over 300,000 readers downloading the app. Pau Gasol, Usain Bolt, Jorge Lorenzo, Carlos Sáinz Jr., Nairo Quintana, Cavani and Vicente del Bosque all graced its front page in the first year.

The year of confirmation, 2015, came with the accolade of ‘Magazine of the year’ from the ‘Digital Magazine Awards’ at the Proud Camden Gallery in London. As well as this prize came high praise from Apple, who named Marca Plus the best app of the year for iPad in Spain. The definitive recognition came with the agreement with Mutua Madrid Open to be the tournament’s official publication and the chance to grow alongside it. Its pages included a spectacular interview with Rafa Nadal.

Tennis always plays a big part in Marca Plus, and not only during this time of year, which is so important in Spain. Stars such as Garbiñe Muguruza, Andy Murray, David Ferrer and Boris Becker have been on the front page and others like Feliciano, Bautista, Robredo and Carla Suárez have given frank interviews inside. In 2016, for the second consecutive year, Marca Plus and the Mutua Madrid Open launched the tournament’s official magazine.

In 2017 it is playing the third set, with the challenge of continuing to grow and improving on the figures recorded in previous years. Both in 2015 and 2016, more than 50,000 hours of dynamism, innovation and animation-packed tournament content were consumed by the readers of Marca Plus. The challenge now is in bettering these figures and continuing to improve on the engagement generated so far. The Marca Plus story is one of rapid success, and the magazine now aspires to collaborate with one of the world’s best tennis tournaments, which is now well established and continues to grow, year after year.
