The clash between Anabel Medina and US player Venus Williams is one of the most attractive first round ties at the Mutua Madrid Open after the draw made on Friday in the Tennis Garden at the Caja Mágica. The two hot favourites Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will both start the tournament against players who have come through the qualifying stages.
The die has been cast. The players taking part in the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open now know the route they will have to take to lift the trophy at the Caja Mágica on the 12th of May.
At a draw which was attended by 2011 champion Petra Kvitova and this year’s wildcards Lourdes Domínguez and Daniela Hantuchova, and which included participation from the public, the first round ties and those for the final draw were finalised.
One of the most interesting matches thrown up by the draw will see Anabel Medina, the organisation’s wildcard, face up against US player Venus Williams, runner-up in 2010 and winner of seven Grand Slams. The two hot favourites to take the trophy, Serena Williams and the Russian Maria Sharapova, will begin their campaigns in the first round against players who have come through the qualifying stages.
World number 3 Victoria Azarenka will have a complicated opener against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and, furthermore, she is in the same part of the draw as Serena Williams, while 2011 champion Petra Kvitova will also have a difficult opponent in the first round, Belgian player Yanina Wickmayer. “I have played her a few times and they have always been difficult three-setters”, said the Czech player at the draw.
As for the remaining Spanish players, Lourdes Domínguez, who was invited into the main draw by the organisation, will play her opener against Simona Halep, another wildcard. Carla Suárez, first-time finalist at this week’s Estoril tournament, has the most difficult match on paper, as she will measure up against ninth seed Samantha Stosur, while Silvia Soler’s first opponent will be Kristina Mladenovic.
