The women’s individual final at the 2012 London Olympic Games has been decided, with America’s Serena Williams through after defeating world number 1 Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals on centre court, in a match in which it only took an hour for Serena to see off her opponent 6-1, 6-2.

Standing between her and Olympic gold is Maria Sharapova, who needed just two sets to see off her countrywoman Maria Kirilenko (6-2, 6-3), who will now take on Azarenka this Saturday for the bronze medal.

In doubles, the Czech partnership of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka is through to this Sunday’s final after breezing past Americans Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) in Friday’s first game on court one.

Their opponents in the fight for a gold medal will be the winners of the encounter which had to be suspended this Friday, between Russians Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova against Olympic champions at Peking 2008, Serena and Venus Williams. The battle for bronze will also take place on Sunday.
