Texto: Four Spaniards will compete in the quarterfinals of the Acapulco ATP World Tour 500 event after Wednesday’s second round action saw Nicolás Almagro, David Ferrer, Fernando Verdasco and Pablo Andújar all win. However, only two will be able to progress to the semifinals as they have to face each other in the next round.
The tournament’s two favourites, Ferrer and Almagro, are on course to repeat last week’s final in Buenos Aires as they progress through this competition strongly. David Ferrer followed up the impressive play that led to his victory in the Argentine capital by beating Poland’s Lukas Kubot in the last sixteen with a double 6-3. His next opponent will be Pablo Andújar, who is enjoying an exceptional tournament and knocked out the fifth seed, Florian Mayer, in the last round in three sets.
Also in the framework are Almagro and Verdasco, the first of who conceded a set to France’s Benoit Paire, but was able to bounce back to win and now faces his compatriot in the quarterfinals. Verdasco, the tournament’s eighth seed, defeated Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela with a straightforward 6-4, 6-2.
The other two Spanish players to play on Wednesday weren’t as lucky and both lost their matches. Albert Ramos managed to scrape a set against Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka but was beaten in the end, as was Marcel Granollers, who suffered at the hands of Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo, who also eliminated David Nalbandián in the first round. Carlos Berlocq and Jeremy Chardy make up the other quarterfinalists.
In the Delray Beach tournament, big favourite John Isner advanced to the quarterfinals after getting the better of fellow American Ryan Sweeting and will now face off against eighth seeded Bernard Tomic for a place in the semis. In the other matches to take place on Wednesday, Marinko Matosevic stunned Alex Bogomolov (6) and will now play Ernests Gulbis in the quarters. The remaining second round ties will be played on Thursday.
