Sunday saw the Under-12 Mutua Madrid Open tournament draw to a close in both the male and female categories. As well as lifting their respective titles in the Caja Mágica’s Stadium 3, the winners also received another very special prize.
In six years time Nicola Kuhn and Paula Arias will have the chance to play in the main event in the Mutua Madrid Open. This Sunday saw the two players win the tournament’s Under-12 event in the Caja Mágica’s Stadium 3. And along with the trophies the were awarded with, they also received wild cards to compete in the qualifiers for the main event in 2018, on the condition that they keep their places within the top eight players in the junior ranking.
In the first of the finals, Nicola Kuhn took on Álvaro Fernández in a hotly contested match. After losing the opening set 4-6, Kuhn levelled matters in the second, getting into the tie and causing his opponent all sorts of problems. Kuhn maintained his grip on the match in the definitive set and killed it off with the final scoring reading 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In the female competition, Ávila native Paula Arias continued to display the fantastic tennis she has been displaying since the beginning of the tournament. She beat Lucía Cortez 6-0, 6-2 in a spectacular match, completing a Mutua Madrid Open campaign where she only lost three games in four rounds of the competition, a truly remarkable figure.
Kuhn and Arias were handed their trophies by the president of the Mutua Madrid Open, Manolo Santana, and the president of the Madrid Tennis Federation, Miguel Díaz Román, who both offered the two youngsters advice on how to develop their future careers.
