Nadal withdraws
Fifth-seeded Scot Andy Murray became the first British player to reach the Australian Open semi-finals since 1977, after he defeated second seed and defending champion Rafael Nadal on Tuesday night.
www.atpworldtour.com The 22-year-old Murray was leading Nadal 6-3, 7-6(2), 3-0, when his Spanish opponent retired due to a right knee injury after two hours and 28 minutes of play. "When the big moments came in the match, I thought I dictated what happened on the court," said Murray. "Obviously I didn't know when he hurt his knee, but from my side I played really well and deserved to be up when the match was stopped."
The result means that Murray joins Roger Taylor (1970) and John Lloyd (1977) as British semi-finalists at the Australian Open in the Open Era (since 1968). He also joins former World No. 4 Tim Henman as the only British man in the modern era to reach semi-finals at three different Grand Slam championships.
