Free third round passages for Nadal, Roddick
No.1 seed Rafael Nadal and No.6 seed Andy Roddick received free passes into the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open after their third round opponents withdrew injured.
Nadal was due to play Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round, but advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with the winner of the Fernando Verdasco v Juan Monaco match when the German withdrew due to a left foot injury.
Roddick’s third round opponent, No10 seed Nikolay Davydenko pulled out with a left leg injury
leaving the American to face Federer for a place in the semifinal.
Thursday's night session will see a revised schedule due to the withdrawals, Juan Monaco of Argentina taking on Fernando Verdasco of Spain followed by a doubles math between Ashley Fisher of Australia and Travis Parrott of the USA against Bruno Soares of Brazil and Kevin Ullyett of Zimbabwe.
