Mutua Madrid Open
Record Book 2002
Andre Agassi was crowned champion of the first tournament without having to play the final. The American, who had survived a tough draw by knocking out Juan Carlos Ferrero (number six) in the quarters and Sebastien Grosjean (number eight) in the semis, benefitted from the withdrawal of Jiri Novak. The Czech was unable to take the court as the result of a pulled muscle in his right leg, handing the trophy to Agassi, who moved to within just 18 points of the world number one spot, at the time occupied by Lleyton Hewitt. It was the US player’s 15th Masters Series (now Masters 1000) win.
