TicketsFederer con mujer al lado

The first time the tournament was held at the Caja Mágica, which was also the first mixed tournament (ATP and WTA) held in Spain, Roger Federer picked up his second title by defeating Rafael Nadal in the final. The Swiss and Mallorcan put on their first great duel on Spanish soil, writing the first chapter in their historic rivalry at the clay tournament. While Federer saw off Nadal on his favourite surface, Dinara Safina would become the first women’s Mutua Madrid Open champion by beating Caroline Wozniacki in the decider. The Russian, who reached number one in the WTA rankings, took the baton from her brother Marat, who won the title in 2004.
