The Mutua Madrid Open now knows the names of the 28 players who will be fighting for a place in the WTA final draw. They will be joined by four players invited by the tournament organisers to battle for their chance for one of the 8 spots up for grabs.

Among the stars taking part, who will enter into action on Friday 5 May and Saturday 6 May, are names such as ex-world number one Jelena Jankovic, who reached the quarter-finals in 2009 and 2010. Other ex-top 10 players such as Eugenie Bouchard and Andrea Petkovic will also be among those hoping for a spot among the best in the Caja Mágica.

Lara Arruabarrena, whose name is on the list, will not have to play in the qualifiers as she has been granted an invitation by the tournament. As well as the player from Tolosa, her fellow Spaniard Sara Sorribes and Maria Sharapova will enjoy wildcard invitations.
