The Uruguayan recorded a special victory over Alexander Zverev, whom he defeated in an intense duel (3-6, 6-0, 6-4) in the Caja Mágica’s Arantxa Sánchez Vicario Stadium. It was special because the win takes him to the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time and also because he produced the point of the year with a shot that stunned anyone lucky enough to see it live. He is now looking forward to his semi-final and wants to make the most of the opportunity to reach the final, where he would meet Nadal or Djokovic.

“I’m very happy being able to make it to my first semifinals in an event like this one”, noted a Cuevas who is satisfied with this season so far. The Uruguayan recognized that he is playing “very good tennis, especially in the last two matches”.
Whomever he meets in the semi-finals, Cuevas is sure that he will “have to be focused on my side of things”.
When asked about the shot of the year, behind his back from the baseline, he said “I don’t practice it very often, it was just a last-minute thing. I thought I hit the ball pretty well. When I looked I saw that it landed in a good place”.
Finally, he wanted to thank the public for their support and especially his compatriots: “I also saw some flags from Uruguay. There were a couple sportsmen from Uruguay, two of whom I was with at the Olympic Games. Also Godin, he was there. In general everyone made me feel comfortable”.
