Novak Djokovic’s winning run on his return to the Mutua Madrid Open continued on Thursday when the world number one swept past Roberto Bautista 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and eight minutes to book his place in the quarter-finals.

“It was after 2-2, in a very long game when I managed to break his serve, that I started to play very well. It was a perfect game. Everything worked well,” said the 2011 champion.

Djokovic stands alone on the ATP Tour in his win-loss record so far this season: the Serbian’s victory over Bautista was his 30th of 2016. During the match the top seed hit 25 winners and won 13 of 14 points at the net while his serve proved to be an impassable obstacle for the Spaniard, who was unable to carve out a single opportunity to break his opponent.

“I didn’t give him a lot of time. I mixed up my serve a lot, opened up the court, playing flat, finding the lines, I worked the slice well… I’m very, very satisfied with my performance,” Djokovic said of the match.

“My first game of the tournament was very solid although afterwards I thought that there were things I could have done better. The way I played today gives me a lot of satisfaction. I just hope I can continue to play like this tomorrow.”
