Serena Williams withdraws from the Mutua Madrid Open

Serena Williams will not be taking part in the 2018 Mutua Madrid Open as she is in need of further training before returning to competition. The American, who was also expected to play in the Mutua Charity Manolo Santana event on Thursday, tried until the last minute to be fit to return to the Caja Mágica clay.

The 2012 and 2013 champion, who has a total of 20 victories in the Spanish capital, is one of the most prolific players in the tournament’s history.

“We are sorry about Serena’s absence and we wish her a speedy recovery”, said Manolo Santana. “She is one of the great champions of our sport, she has always delivered at our tournament and we hope to see her back in the Caja Mágica in the future”, ended the Director of the Mutua Madrid Open.

Her place in the Mutua Charity Manolo Santana event, to be played on Thursday 3 May at 19.30 in the Caja Mágica, will be filled be her compatriot Coco Vandeweghe.
