On 6 May the Mutua Madrid Open hosted fan number two million since the tournament has been played at the Caja Mágica. Tournament Director, Manolo Santana and president and CEO Gerard Tsobanian hosted Marta Anítua, who was officially the two millionth visitor.
The precinct, which hosts the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and WTA Premier Mandatory events, had registered the visit of 1,978,533 fans before this edition got underway, with the remaining 21,467 required to make it to two million coming through the doors at the Caja Mágica.
“I’m very grateful for this moment”, said Marta, thrilled about the special welcome she was given in the Caja Mágica. “It was a complete surprise to me. I was already really looking forward to enjoying the tennis and having a good day, now I’m even more excited, being beside Manolo Santana is very special”. Marta received a number of gifts from the organisers and enjoyed the privilege of tossing the coin in the match between Garbiñe Muguruza and Peng Shuai.
“We have worked very hard to reach 2 million spectators at our tournament”, stated Manolo Santana. “It encourages us to keep improving the tournament every year and is evidence of the enormous growth of the event. We hope Marta is able to enjoy a nice day at the Caja Mágica and will have wonderful memories of this moment”, ended the tournament director.
