The WTA stars discover their route to the title

The main hopefuls for the Mutua Madrid Open throne discovered their route to the final on Friday. In the draw on the VIP terrace, an event that was attended by Monica Puig, the WTA matches were decided as the players prepare to play on the Caja Mágica clay.

The defending champion, Simona Halep, first seed and winner of the last two editions of the tournament, will start her challenge against the Russian Ekaterina Makarova in a big WTA clash. Big names at the top of the draw include Sloane Stephens, Karolina Pliskova and Venus Williams.

The Spanish contingent is guaranteed to entertain from the first round. Third seed Garbiñe Muguruza will play her first match against the Chinese Shuai Peng and could meet Georgina García in the second round of the tournament. The Barcelona native will take on Croatian player Donna Vekic in one of the most anticipated matches among the home fans.

Also at the top of the draw, Sara Sorribes faces a demanding opener against 13th seed Madison Keys, one of the most promising players on the WTA tour.

For her part, Carla Suárez will start her campaign against Barbora Strycova in a match that promises plenty of imagination. Also, two wildcards meet at the bottom of the draw when Lara Arruabarrena and Marta Kostyuk clash for the first time in the Spanish capital.

Some of the main candidates to the throne will be playing in some enticing matches. 2009 finalist Caroline Wozniacki will take on Australian player Daria Gavrilova; Maria Sharapova, champion in 2014, will start her assault on the title against the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu; and Venus Williams, the eighth seed, will meet Estonian player Anett Kontaveit.
