Four-time Mutua Madrid Open champion, Rafael Nadal, defeated Australian player Nick Kyrgios. With this victory, the Manacor native sealed his passage to the quarter finals of the Madrid tournament. After the match, Nadal was very happy with his work on court: “I think I played really well tonight”, he said. “I made a step forward compared to yesterday”, he added.
Unfortunately, Kyrgios did not have his best day. The final result (6-3, 6-1) was a true reflection of what happened in the one hour and 12 minutes of tennis. Despite recognizing that he put in a solid performance, Nadal was also aware that his opponent could have played better: “I think it’s not normal to win against an opponent like this because Nick is a really good opponent”.
In the next round, the Spaniard will face David Goffin, who saw off Milos Raonic. The Balearic Islander was full of praise for the Belgian: “He’s going to be one of the best players. He’s very fit”, he stated. “I know that I have to play at my highest level, perhaps similar to today or even better”, he added.
There are no easy matches left at the Mutua Madrid Open and Nadal is all too aware of this and the fact that, although he is happy with his game against Kyrgios, he knows that he will have to step it up a notch to get past Goffin: “I have some margin to do even better tomorrow, to step forward. Hopefully I will make it to the next round. Tomorrow is a day I have to be ready and give 100%”, he said. Finally, he highlighted how different it is to play in Madrid compared with other tournaments: “Anything can happen. It’s easier to lose the positive feelings here than in the rest of the tournaments”, noted the Mallorcan.
