Ya se conocen todas las componentes de los octavos de final del torneo de Charleston tras la disputa de los últimos once choques de la segunda ronda. En una jornada sin sorpresas, Venus Williams protagonizó el partido de la jornada al derrotar a la serbia Jelena Jankovic en dos mangas. Tras un primer set igualado que se llevó la norteamericana por 5-7, Venus barrió a la europea con un rotundo 0-6. Con esta victoria, la mayor de las Williams se enfrentará en octavos de final a la australiana Anastasia Rodionova, la verdugo de Anabel Medina en segunda ronda.

De las favoritas, Marion Bartoli, tercera cabeza de serie, sufrió ante la rusa Vera Dushevina al llegar a tres sets. La francesa se llevó la primera manga por 6-2, cedió la segunda en el ‘tie-break’ y terminó venciendo el partido por 6-4. Por su parte, Sabine Lisicki, sexta raqueta favorita en el torneo de categoría WTA Premier, tuvo que remontar un 2-6 en contra frente a la checa Andrea Hlavackova con un 6-3 y 6-4 que le sirvió para acceder a octavos de final.

La novena cabeza de serie Lucie Safarova pasó sin problemas contra Mirjana Lucic por un claro 2-6 y 0-6, mientras que Nadia Petrova remontó con apuros frente a Jil Craybas un 2-6 inicial con dos mangas saldadas por 7-6 (8-6) y 6-2. De esta forma, la 13ª cabeza de serie progresa y protagonizará un duelo fraticida ante Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

En el resto de enfrentamientos, Polona Hercog ganó a Varvara Lepchenko, Stefanie Vögele a Lucie Hradecka, Aleksandra Wozniak a Barbora Zahlavova, Yaroslava Shvedova a Yanina Wickmayer, Marina Erakovic a Anna Tatishvili y Galina Voskoboeva a la argentina Paula Ormaechea.The quarter-final lineup at Charleston has now been decided after the completion of the eleven remaining second-round encounters. In a day of surprises, Venus Williams was the star of what was the match of the day, defeating Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic in two sets. After a tight first set which Williams took 5-7, she then went on to sweep aside any further resistance from Jankovic, to win the second set 0-6. This victory puts her through to face Anastasia Rodionova in the quarters, the Australian having sent Spain’s Anabel Medina home in the second round.

Of the favourites to win in Charleston, third seed Marion Bartoli, had to struggle to defeat Russia’s Vera Dushevina in a match that went to three sets. The Frenchwoman took the first set with a convincing 6-2, but the Russian fought back to snatch the second after a tie-break forcing Bartoli to draw on experience to win the third and final set 6-4. Meanwhile, Sabine Lisicki, seeded sixth in the WTA Premier tournament, had to fight back from conceding a set to Czech player Andrea Hlavackova to win 2-6 6-3 6-4 and make it through to the quarters.

Ninth seed Lucie Safarova eased past Mirjana Lucic with a clear 2-6 0-6 final score, while Nadia Petrova had to dig much deeper against Jill Craybas. She came back from being down a set to win 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2. The No.13 seed is therefore through to the next round where she will face her countrywoman Anastasia Pavyluchenko.
