Mutua Madrid Open
Record Book 2003
Juan Carlos Ferrero became the first local player to win Spain’s most important tournament. The Valencian, who was the world number one at the time, celebrated victory after three matches that pushed him to the limit. In his opener, he got past Wayne Ferreira after winning a final-set tiebreak. He then saw off Roger Federer (world number three and recent champion of Wimbledon) after another tight three-set clash. Finally, he beat Nicola Massu in another three-setter in the final, giving Ferrero his third Masters Series on home soil.
