With some mercurial tennis, David Nalbandian won the tournament after doing something that had never been done before: consecutively beating the top three players in the world ranking. The Argentinian defeated Rafael Nadal (quarter-finals), Novak Djokovic (semi-finals) and Roger Federer (final) in an exhibition that he would repeat days later to win the second Masters Series of his career in Paris.
